Classroom with instructor teaching

The first term of Spring Semester begins Monday, January 13. We are looking forward to spending a wonderful semester with you! Here are some reminders that will help the semester get off to a smooth start:

  • Spring semester begins Monday, January 13.
  • OLLI, McKimmon Center, and NC State will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
  • Parking – If you are new to OLLI this Spring, here are some helpful hints about parking:
McKimmon Center has over 700 free parking spaces. Park only in the spaces with green lines; these are the free parking spaces. Occasionally, we receive heavy parking notices from McKimmon Center when large functions are taking place in the building. Please check the weekly emails that come from our office on Wednesdays; heavy parking alerts are located near the bottom of the email. Plan to arrive a few minutes early on days with heavy parking notices so that you have extra time to find a parking space.
  • Name Tents – If you had a name tent in the fall, bring it with you to class! If you were not with us in the fall, a name tent has been printed for you. Look for your name tent (alphabetically organized by last name) in the hall outside of the classrooms. Please take your name tent with you and bring it back and forth to classes.
  • Code of Conduct (link to code of conduct) – Adopted in May 2024, OLLI’s Code of Conduct establishes shared norms for classroom interactions that help ensure everyone has a good classroom experience.
  • Weather Policy –
    • OLLI programs, including off-site classes and study trips, are canceled when the Wake County Public Schools close to students because of adverse weather.
    • Wake County School delays in opening do not affect OLLI’s schedule; we operate on a normal schedule.
    • When the school system closes early because of impending weather, we typically do not cancel OLLI classes, but watch for an email from the OLLI office under those circumstances.
    • Zoom courses/lectures may be able to continue despite adverse weather, and decisions on Zoom courses/lectures will be made on a case-by-case basis. Look for an email from the OLLI office on the day of the lecture/class.

Zoom Reminders If you are registered for a class on Zoom, here are tips to ensure success in joining your first class meeting:

  •  Please try to arrive a few minutes before class starts, and make sure your mic is on mute (red slash through microphone indicates you are on mute).
  • It is a good idea to make sure you are operating the most current version of Zoom before your class begins. Below are instructions on how to check which version you have and make any needed updates before class starts:

How to check which version of Zoom you are using:

  • Open the Zoom app
  • Click on the gear button in the upper right corner
  • Click on “Statistics” tab
  • The version will be listed in near the bottom of the screen

How to update Zoom:

  • Open the Zoom app
  • Sign in and click on the icon in the upper-right corner of the screen (should be your picture or initials)
  • Select “Check for Updates”
  • If there is a newer version, Zoom will download and install it

You can also manually download the latest version:
