Beyond the classroom…
Meet Larry Kingsley - a writer and musician extraordinaire!
| Continuing our theme from the last few weekly emails of sharing ways to stay involved in OLLI over the summer, this week we’re spotlighting the OLLI Writers Group. The OLLI Writer’s Group provides members with an opportunity to share their writings of all kinds – from short stories to essays to novels to poetry and nonfiction – and to give and receive feedback. While their size is limited by the meeting space available, at the moment, the group has a few open spaces and would love to invite new members to come and try the group out. They meet on the first Monday* of every month from 12:00pm – 1:30pm in the Cultural Resources Room (Room 100) near the McKimmon Center main entrance. (*When the first Monday happens to be a holiday, they meet on the second Monday of the month.) A willingness to share your writings with others, being open to receiving feedback, and being willing to share feedback with other writers are key characteristics of writers who will find a good fit with this group. Interested in trying out and/or joining the Writers Group Special Interest Group? Please contact Larry Kingsley at lkings2812@mindspring.com and Henrique Gomes at husg38@gmail.com. |
| Did the name “Larry Kingsley” sound familiar as you read it? There’s a good reason for that. If you haven’t met him in an OLLI class or event, you may have heard him playing his trumpet in Cary to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research. Here’s a great article on Larry from the Washington Post …and here’s Larry’s spotlight from the Tarheel Traveler. Larry has been an OLLI member for many years. Before his wife’s illness and passing, he was a regular in Dave Milidonis’ and Jim Clark’s classes. These days, his focus is on the Writers’ Group – pursuing his love of storytelling (especially dialogue), refining his craft, and supporting other writers. He’s also quite busy in his life outside of OLLI. He has found love again and is busy preparing a new home with his fiancé (who he lovingly calls his sweetheart). And his long-time career in real estate development continues; he is actively working on a new project right now. Larry, thank you for being a champion and advocate for writers and the OLLI Writers’ Group! |
