Instructor Spotlight: Dr. Bryan Ormond
On October 15, OLLI will welcome Dr. Bryan Ormond to our program as a first time instructor!
Dr. Ormond is an Associate Professor in NC State’s Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science Department, having received his Ph.D. from NC State in 2012. He also has a joint appointment in the Textile Protection and Comfort Center (TPACC) where he has conducted impactful research on personal protective clothing and occupational exposures. The Ormond Research Group has focused on developing test methods, standards, equipment and ensembles for first responders and military personnel to address protection from chemical, particulate and thermal hazards. Firefighter PPE: Shielding Against Carcinogenic Exposures | Oct. 15 |

Despite advances in personal protective equipment (PPE), firefighters continue to experience significant skin exposure to hazardous fireground contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This presentation reviews recent laboratory and field research evaluating the effectiveness of current firefighter protective clothing in blocking these toxic chemicals. In vitro skin diffusion experiments and system-level ensemble testing reveal that substantial amounts of harmful vapors penetrate even advanced PPE, leaving firefighters at risk. The findings highlight critical limitations of existing gear and emphasize the urgent need for improved protective solutions to reduce occupational cancer risks among firefighters.
