Teach for OLLI
Become a Volunteer Instructor for OLLI
OLLI Instructors Are the Foundation of our Program
OLLI NC State attracts top-notch instructors from our campus, local and national universities, various industries, the community and from our own membership. Instructors generously volunteer their time in support of the intellectual stimulation and educational enrichment that should continue throughout the lifespan.
OLLI aims to provide a multidirectional learning environment that enriches our instructors as much as their audience. Our adult learners come from various backgrounds: from business to academia, from North Carolina to places from all over the U.S and even globally. They come with the desire to learn simply for the fun of learning. Their eagerness is evident in the classroom as they engage the instructors with thoughtful questions and share valuable insights to enhance the learning experience.
“OLLI members are lively, curious, engaged, friendly, and simply enjoyable to be with. They often are well-read on material of the course or about connected ideas for what we’re discussing. They also bring their own stories and knowledge to the topic. The experience with an engaged audience with good questions is how one wishes classes could always be.“
Dr. William Kimler
Associate Professor of History, NC State
“There is no better pleasure than having a classroom full of interested and engaged students. They are there because they want to be, not because they must.”
Dr. Sarah Ash
Professor Emerita of Nutrition, NC State
Volunteer Support is Essential to our Success
OLLI is a self-supporting unit of NC State Continuing and Lifelong Education. As such we rely on volunteer participation from our instructors, to help keep program costs low and allow as many people as possible from the adult learning community to enjoy OLLI. While we cannot offer our instructors financial compensation, we use our resources to ensure that they receive the best administrative and technical support available.
“I enjoyed teaching at OLLI. I found the support given, and the structure and the spirit of the program all very conducive to teaching and learning.“
Rev. E. Carson Brisson
We are grateful for the amazing support we receive from our instructors! View a complete list of all who are participating in our upcoming semester.
Teach for OLLI
OLLI offers courses and lectures consisting of one to six 90-minute sessions on weekdays. Occasional offsite and evening courses are offered. Most programs take place at the McKimmon Conference and Training Center on NC State’s campus. Some programs are only offered remotely via Zoom.
OLLI’s curriculum is conceived “by our members, for our members.” Volunteer subcommittees submit course ideas in topics such as arts and literature, government and world affairs, history, lifestyle and wellness, and science and technology. Our subcommittees work to identify potential instructors that may be a good fit for an idea and reach out to make connections on behalf of OLLI.
If you are interested in teaching for OLLI, we would love to hear from you. Submit a course proposal form to be considered by our subcommittees. All submissions are received by OLLI’s Assistant Director for review. Please allow up to one week for a response to your submission.
